This is quiet courage — not loud wins, but grace that kept walking through grief. Your words remind us that…

What I would un event.

If you could un-invent something, what would it be?

Uneventing the Gun: A Thought Experiment on Fair Fights

The invention of the gun revolutionized conflict, making it more impersonal and often tipping the scales of power unfairly. But what if we could turn back the clock and “unevent” the gun? Could we restore a sense of balance and honor in physical confrontations? This blog post explores the idea of eliminating firearms from human history to create a fairer playing field in conflicts.

The Origins of Guns and Power Dynamics

The gun emerged as a tool for survival, defense, and dominance. While it democratized warfare by allowing the less skilled to challenge the highly trained, it also made conflict more deadly and asymmetric. A person with a firearm can overpower many unarmed individuals, making fights less about skill and more about who has the better weapon.

But what if the gun had never been invented? What if humanity had chosen another path for conflict resolution?

A World Without Guns

Without guns, societies would have relied on hand-to-hand combat, melee weapons, and perhaps advanced martial training. Conflicts would require physical skill, endurance, and personal courage. Imagine a duel fought with swords, where each participant must rely on their training, reflexes, and honor to determine the outcome.

A world without guns might also emphasize non-violent conflict resolution. Diplomacy, negotiation, and mental strategy could take precedence over brute force. The absence of firearms could foster a culture that values skill and strategy over sheer destructive power.

The Question of Fairness

In a gunless world, fairness in conflict would depend on equitable access to training and weapons. It wouldn’t necessarily eliminate violence but might level the playing field, giving individuals a chance to defend themselves based on their abilities rather than technological superiority.

However, fairness is a complex concept. Physical strength, agility, and even access to resources like food and training would still create inequalities. While removing guns could balance one aspect of power dynamics, it wouldn’t erase disparities entirely.

Until next time…
