This is quiet courage — not loud wins, but grace that kept walking through grief. Your words remind us that…

If I were to Ban a word

If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?

If I Were to Ban a Word, It Would Be “Shit

If I had the power to ban a single word from general use, I wouldn’t have to think too hard about my choice. Without a doubt, the word I’d send into permanent exile would be “shit.”

Now, don’t get me wrong. I understand that language is fluid, and words gain different meanings over time. Some people use “shit” as a casual way to describe something cool (“This is the shit!“), while others throw it around in frustration (“Oh, shit!”). It’s one of those words that can fit into almost any conversation—good or bad. But that’s exactly why it needs to go. It’s overused, messy, and, frankly, unnecessary.

1. It’s Just Too Common

“Shit” has become a filler word, losing any real impact. Whether someone’s upset, excited, surprised, or indifferent, this one word finds its way in. Instead of expressing emotions clearly, people rely on it as a shortcut. Imagine how much richer our conversations would be if we took a moment to find more precise words.

2. It Lacks Creativity

One of the best things about language is its ability to evolve with creativity. But when we lean too heavily on lazy words like “shit,” we limit ourselves. There are so many colorful ways to express frustration or excitement without defaulting to the same tired word. Instead of calling something “bullshit,” why not say it’s absurd, ridiculous, or nonsensical? Instead of saying “this is the shit,” how about calling it brilliant, top-tier, or legendary?

3. It’s Unnecessarily Harsh

While curse words have their place in certain settings, “shit” has a blunt, rough quality that often makes it feel more aggressive than intended. Even when used casually, it doesn’t always land well. If someone spills coffee on their shirt and yells, “Shit!” it might not seem like a big deal. But in a professional or formal setting, it instantly shifts the tone.

4. It’s a Lazy Cop-Out

Instead of saying, “I feel like shit,” why not be more specific? Are you exhausted, overwhelmed, sick, or just having a bad day? Using clearer language doesn’t just improve communication—it also helps people better understand and connect with you.

What’s the Alternative?

Banning “shit” doesn’t mean we should replace it with another overused word. Instead, we should challenge ourselves to think before we speak, to express emotions with intention rather than habit. Imagine a world where frustration is met with poetic insults, where excitement is described with depth, and where language is used to its full potential.

So, if I were going to ban a word, “shit” would be the first to go. And honestly? I don’t think we’d miss it.

Until next time…
