Traditions That Give Life Depth

One cultural tradition I love from America is Thanksgiving. I enjoy what it represents: gathering with family and friends, sharing a meal, reflecting on what we are grateful for, and simply making time to appreciate the people and things that matter. There is something meaningful about a tradition that encourages you to slow down and recognize what you have.

From Ghana, one tradition I love is the Aboakyiri Festival, celebrated in Winneba. It is colorful, energetic, and deeply connected to the community’s history. One of the most exciting parts is the deer hunt, where men go into the forest to catch a deer. The first man to successfully bring one back wins. Beyond the competition, the festival brings people together through celebration, culture, music, and tradition.

I appreciate both traditions for different reasons. Thanksgiving gives me a sense of gratitude and togetherness, while Aboakyiri connects me to the vibrant culture and traditions of Ghana. Having an appreciation for both American and Ghanaian traditions gives me a broader perspective on celebration and community.

For me, traditions offer depth to life. They remind us where we come from, give us reasons to gather, and create memories that can be passed from one generation to another. Whether it is sitting around a Thanksgiving table or celebrating the colorful energy of Aboakyiri, I love how traditions turn ordinary moments into something meaningful.
